WHILST I understand the commercial imperative for the Christmas market in the city, I find it sad that one unfortunate consequence is the relegation of the magnificent Christmas tree from its pre-eminent position of former years, to where it is now, squashed up against the Guildhall, and practically out of sight behind the rows of sheds that comprise the Christmas stalls.

It seems like a metaphor for the modern trend of commercialism crowding out the traditional and romantic side of Christmas.

Would it not be better to find a place for the tree in the centre of the market square itself, where it could be seen and enjoyed from all directions?

I think it would have looked terrific there. If a tree can be erected in the centre of the Old George Mall each Christmas, then surely this must be possible!
