A TUNNEL is not the solution to hide the A303 and just to make Stonehenge look better or stop the passing motorist from seeing the stones as they pass by.
A tunnel is going to need new connecting roads unless these roads are put further to the south they are still going to be in sight of Stonehenge.
The simplest and most cost effective option giving motorists what they want is a new dual road running more or less parallel to the existing A303 to also include the much needed Winterbourne Stoke by-pass.
If an attractive row of trees or shrubs were planted on the north side of the existing A303 nearest to Stonehenge this will hide the stones from passing motorists plus it could enhance the Stonehenge site.
The existing A303 could be still be in constant use while construction of the new road is in progress.

STONEHENGE has never obstructed any road but was sited there because 5,000 years ago it was, as it still is today, at the crossroad of southern England.
The astronomers of the day were proud of their achievement and wanted all to see it.
Not hide it with a tunnel. It was sited so all could see it. Another was built at Avebury and 200 are known in the British Isles.
Celtic experts believe we have had 2,000.
The Stonehenge tunnel is only to force visitors to pay at the turnstiles.
