YOUR readers may not be aware – and it certainly came as a surprise to me – that there are no regulatory controls over light aircraft flying from Old Sarum Airfield.

Wiltshire Planning has no control, The Civil Aviation Authority has no control and the general law of Nuisance, the Noise Act and the Environmental Protection Act do not apply to aircraft.

Thus, a pilot may fly at any time of day or night as frequently as he or she likes doing circuits and aerobatics over residential property as often as he or she wishes.

Inevitably this will peak in the summer when the rest of us wish to enjoy our gardens and the outside life.

So, when the proposed residential development at Old Sarum is justified in the name of capital finance to secure the airfield’s viability, expansion and growth you can be sure that the result will be greater disturbance to those of us living around the site – and there will be nothing that Wiltshire or the CAA can do about it after the event.

I urge those who may be affected to voice their concerns.
