My wife and I joined a coach trip from Surrey to Salisbury on December 10.

Our aim was to see the cathedral and the Christmas market.

We were dropped off in the centre late morning and set out to explore.

As usual, I got lost (my wife says I can lose my way from the kitchen to the living room).

As I peered at the map, so thoughtfully provided by the city council, one of your locals asked if he could help.

He escorted us to the Christmas market, although that seemed to be out of his way, and wished us a happy day in Salisbury. Later we were looking for a post office to be able to properly stamp a letter to Australia and asked someone the way.

Unfortunately that person wasn't local and couldn't help, but someone who overheard our enquiry said he could rescue us and did so, pointing out the post office near the arch to the cathedral.

We felt that these two examples showed Salisbury residents in a very good light and want to thank them and the city for helping to ease our way.
