WE in South Wilts Mencap are tremendously proud of our member Helen Taylor, who has spoken out at a meeting in the House of Commons about the needs of parents of disabled children (Journal, January 29).

We are very aware of the issues faced by mums like Helen who campaign to get the services they need and deserve for youngsters with disabilities like Helen’s daughter. Speaking out publicly in the way Helen did requires real courage. But there is some good news. Helen mentioned the closure of the social club meeting her daughter’s needs.

The really good news is that with full funding from Wiltshire Council the club reopened in October 2014 under the management of South Wilts Mencap.

Renamed "Our Club" by the youngsters themselves, it runs on Thursday evenings at St Francis’ Church Youth Club and already has over 20 children aged 13 to 18 attending regularly each week, supported by a team led by Dolly Burnett. Having now got the club up and running so successfully, we are just beginning to recruit young people to support and share in the club in a peer mentoring scheme.

The contact number for Our Club is 07801 836468 or you can find more details at www.south wiltsmencap.org.uk.
