I HAVE just read in the property section that agent Myddleton and Major arranged the letting of three brand new houses in the centre of the city which were bought by one single investor.

This has infuriated me so much I just had to put pen to paper.

It is because greedy investors are buying up property that young people and others, for example older people, who would benefit from a move to the town centre are being priced out of the market. The more houses, old or new, which are bought by so-called investors the less able the younger generation will ever be to afford to buy their own houses. I can understand that individuals buy one property, which represents their pension which, given the instability of the conventional methods, will be realised when they need it.

However, I cannot find any justification for those who seek to have a portfolio of properties, charge inordinate rents which are often greater than the average salary and often do relatively little in terms of real work. I am sure that when the Register Office and the adjacent buildings (local authority-owned) were vacated, many local folk thought that this might be a chance to have affordable houses to buy in the city.

No chance!

The same applies to the redevelopment of the bus station.

The apartments/houses being built for retired people will be far too expensive for the average retiree.

The whole property business makes my blood boil – and there are a lot of people making large sums of money doing relatively little, for example the investors and the letting agents. I have no doubt this letter will evoke angry responses from those seeking to justify their jobs, their acquisitions, their means of making a living – hopefully people stuck in the rental market will also stand up and be counted.

Where is the humanity in all this?
