IN response to Geoff Jensen’s letter in last week’s Postbag: while I agree with the last sentence of his letter and facts relating to the St Gotthard tunnel disaster, I take exception to his arguments against the proposed tunnel.

He is not taking into account the reduction of accidents and pollution that upgrading of the road to a dual carriageway and tunnel past Stonehenge will bring. The chances of another St Gotthard incident are minuscule, but the daily pollution and regular accidents are a reality.

The benefits to those of us who work and live in the area are probably immeasurable and I for one wish the process could be quickly concluded and construction could begin.

The sooner the work is done the sooner we can enjoy the benefits.
