Your report on the general election result states that our MP expects the LibDems to bounce back (Journal, 14th May).
I am delighted -for once- to agree with John Glen and inform him that our bounce back began when the polls closed. In the six days following, we had a surge of new members, adding 38 and boosting the size of Salisbury Liberal Democrats by over a third in under one week.
Nationally, the LibDems gained over eleven thousand members during the same six days.
Our new Salisbury members recognise the moderating influence of the LibDems on the last government. They are rightly alarmed at the prospect of five years of rightwing Tory rule with restrictions on human rights, a snooper's charter, spending cuts hitting the most vulnerable in our society and the damaging possibility of a 'Brexit' if the UK votes to leave the EU in two years time.
And this is not to mention restrictions on the right to strike and an uncertain future for the BBC as we know it, with its charter due for review. I could go on.
The fightback in Salisbury has begun!
Ian Curr
Secretary,
Salisbury LibDems
