THE levels of nitrogen dioxide which have recently been measured by Salisbury Clean Air Network (SCAN) have shown that the EC (and UK) annual average limit of 40 microgrammes per cubic metre of air has been exceeded on no fewer than ten occasions out of the 25 samples.

Twice by more than ten and once by more than a staggering 20 grammes per cubic metre.

Wiltshire Council Salisbury Area Board’s response so far has been to plant a few roadside saplings.

We all know what is causing these totally unacceptable levels of pollution.

It is too many vehicles using our narrow streets.

However, a recent public consultation on Wiltshire Council’s Air Quality Action Plan resulted in only seven detailed responses.

Whereas I understand that, over much the same time period, more than 5,000 responses were received in relation to Wiltshire Council’s proposals on car parking.

If only we could see and smell nitrogen dioxide.
