THE debate about waste collection seems to be going in the wrong direction, precipitated by Wiltshire Council’s curtailment of the Churchfields (recycling centre) opening hours. Let’s hope they quickly realise their mistake rather than retreating into the Trowbridge bunker!

Refuse collection is one of the essential services in an urban society and, in my experience, Salisbury enjoys a good service due to the hard work of the front line operatives. £40 for garden waste is a red herring – good value if you have a garden and no need to pay if you don’t.

More generally these services do have to be paid for. Collection by some form of taxation is necessary even though the obvious sources are blocked off by the government’s ‘red lines’.

Personally I favour changing tax codes because that excludes people who do not earn enough to pay tax.
