IT seems our vision team still does not realise that we have a medieval city built on a flood plain. At the centre of an important historical area our main industry is tourism.

Our shops are concentrated on the very difficult access in Southampton Road.

Let’s look at two areas mentioned in your report. Last week’s headline was traffic problems visiting Churchfields.

A few days ago I drove past Oxford Science Park. This is accessed by several entrances from a dual carriageway off the southern bypass.

In contrast, Churchfields has two accesses from one single-carriageway road, narrow bridges and in some cases vehicles have to go through our city streets. What is to happen to existing businesses?

We have lost some major local science businesses in recent years. Porton and Boscombe are fighting for survival.

The Market Place has already had an expensive makeover. OK, the gravel was an attraction for vandals, the stones were imported, the bins are unattractive, the alcohol-free zone is a joke ignored by pubs and market stalls.

It is a medieval market, not a big continental plaza. Salisbury is not Berlin or Amsterdam as mentioned in the report. Our narrow pedestrian areas are already adversely affected by the amount of café furniture to the annoyance of both tourists and locals. No more please.

Please let us sensibly develop Salisbury.
