IN the Journal article of September 10, John Glen MP was stated as saying ‘I know that Alabaré, Wiltshire Council and the Churches are thinking very carefully on how to make a meaningful contribution in South Wiltshire.”

Churches Together in Salisbury has a membership of 26 across the denominations.

We are deeply concerned and daunted by the burgeoning refugee and migrant crisis and agreed the following at our meeting on September 15.

Individual churches will organise and support their own projects with money, clothes and other relief.

The UK government has agreed to accept 20,000 refugees with priority for orphans and needy families.

In South Wiltshire we fully support the initiative of John Proctor from Alabaré working with the Trussell Trust and the Salisbury Trust for the Homeless.

The churches can provide some accommodation, expertise and a network of sensible and committed volunteers.

We welcome the forthcoming meeting of John Proctor, Chris Mould, John Glen MP and Wiltshire Council leader Jane Scott.

There is great urgency as winter approaches and the weather in the Middle East becomes wetter and colder.

Churches Together will try to provide all the local help needed, and pray.

We invite people to join us.

1)We pray the barbarous conflict in Syria and Iraq may come to an end and pressure is applied to other countries who are fuelling the war with armaments and money.

2) We pray refugee camps in Jordan and the Lebanon are adequately resourced.

3) We pray migrants already in Europe may be treated humanely and that sensible plans may be drawn up and implemented for their future.
