ON August 12, I wrote to the leader of Wiltshire Council that when walking with friends along the Old Shaftesbury Drove road to Salisbury Racecourse we were aghast at the extent of the fly-tipping.

I wrote as (i) the council website seemed to offer no facility for reporting fly-tipping, (ii) the whole area could have been cleaned up in a day by two energetic people with the right equipment, and (iii) Wiltshire – Salisbury in particular – justifiably publicise the beauty of the countryside, and yet here was a squalid area close to the city and alongside one of the county’s major amenities.

I got a reply from a PA in the council offices that “Cllr Scott has asked her Cabinet member for Highways, Cllr Philip Whitehead, to look into your concerns, and he will respond in due course”.

Two months later, and after various reminders to the council, I have still heard nothing. Perhaps the fact that I do not live in Wiltshire prompted the decision not to bother with any response...
