BEING a House Blocker, and thinking about downsizing, I was interested in the article about the Quantum Group’s plans for the regeneration of the Old Manor site, creating a retirement complex.

It is unfortunate Dr McKeown was quoted out of context, and the use of the word ‘ghetto’ rather harsh. Dr McKeown would rather see a mixed development with young and old people living on the same site.

There are flaws in this argument, one being that families generate more vehicles, and Wilton Road is already very congested. The Quantum Group plan to have a car share system whereby the residents could use a car from a car pool and dispense with their own cars.

My main objection to a mixed development is this: I have spent the best part of my life caring for my children (very rewarding), my grandchildren (fun), and other people’s children. Been there, done that! This is my time, and if I wanted to live near families I would move to one of the newer developments full of young families.

The truth is that families generate noise, and I am of an age when I want a bit more peace and quiet. I want to live among my peer group. The retirement complex will cater for the over 55s. This is a large demographic, and will fit the bill perfectly. The facilities offered by the Quantum Group are everything I could wish for all on one site.

A visit to the theatres or market just a short taxi ride away. I deserve this kind of retirement. I hope those on the planning committee will not over-think this application, and will allow the Quantum Group to deliver what will be a development that Salisbury will be proud of. And, of course, peace and quiet!
