I WAS horrified last week to see a notice up on our public toilets in Wilton Market Square stating that Wiltshire Council has no statutory obligation to fund them.

As someone who regularly uses these toilets whilst walking my dog down to and around Wilton and into the local parks what am I to do?

I saw in the Journal it was suggested that we use a local supermarket. This is not an option in Wilton as the only supermarkets have staff toilets only.

I do not have the option of waiting so wondered what the legal situation is? I noticed, in last week's Journal, a man was fined over £300 for urinating in a street recently. This closure is not going to make it any easier.

The Wilton Market Square is a busy place, very close to Salisbury City with a lot of through traffic from the city. It also has a weekly market. Staff on the stalls need a toilet as do the people running the annual funfair.

As such, I think the public toilets are absolutely essential. If you want to save money stop spraying weedkiller on the road verges, pavements, highways and parks around the whole of Wiltshire. Also, don’t cut the verges so early in the year. This would benefit both wildlife and the budget at the same time.
