HOW surprised I was to read the two Journal Postbag (November 5) views of the Magna Carta dramas!

Any form of art is, of course, subjective so perhaps I might express a contrasting view?

These plays brought wholly original perspectives to clauses from the political document of 1250; perspectives of some of the UK’s internationally renowned playwrights. I was led through medieval scenes with Shakespearian language device (cleverly modernised); rainforest; cathedral to an uncharted future. They spoke of ownership: political wrangling for ‘top spot’; the environment and global power; the rule of law and the precious nature of justice.

Superbly acted and challenging for actors and audience.

I’m an irregular theatregoer but when I enjoy dramas, perhaps on TV, I tend to use a weekly publication with a synopsis which I believe informs my limited choices. The joy of Salisbury Playhouse, with comparatively competitive pricing options, is that they dare to commission original and relevant works for our fantastic city, in addition to the more classic and comedy treats. What starts here may well tour the country or go on to the West End.

We have such richness of offer for a variety of art forms in this special city of ours. The Playhouse offers great variety in one permanent place and needs our support. Let’s all go and see whatever ‘grabs’ us – and be thankful it is there!
