WHAT a splendid, rousing, carol service the committee of the Salisbury branch of Cancer Research arranged in St Thomas’s Church last Sunday, at which there were many present who were visiting Salisbury for the Christmas Market; what a bonus for them.

The superb church choir, a close harmony group, and the talented Shrewton Silver Band, provided an eclectic programme of music, making the ancient building reverberate with the sounds of Christmas, as the congregation joined in the singing.

How refreshing, also, to hear loud applause – very rare during a church service – as each musical offering concluded, so perhaps “audience”, rather than “congregation”, would be a better description!

A heart-warming start to our festivities.
