I HAVE fond memories of shopping at Appleby’s bakery when I was seven or eight years old.
Back in 1940 I had to buy the daily bread for our family before going to junior school.
The loaf was always warm and I was always tempted to nibble on the crust.
I also have memories of going to the bakers to collect a wedding cake with my aunt. She was in the ATS stationed near Salisbury. So this would also be during the war years.
I lived in Castle Street until I married in 1954. But my parents still lived there until 1976 and 1977 and they were customers of the Appleby’s.
I wish Mark and his wife a happy, healthy retirement. They will be missed.
