MY FIRST memory of Appleby’s is coming into town on the early bus from Hamptworth where we were evacuated from Southampton (my dad worked at the spitfire factory at Woolston, which was bombed and was transferred to Salisbury) en route to South Wilts Grammar School.
I was 11 at the time, and it was 1941.
Popping into Appleby’s to buy a penny or two penny bag of yesterday’s buns – to make up for no breakfast. Delicious.
What I didn’t know was we weren’t allowed to eat while out in our school uniform – oops.
But I didn’t get caught and the buns were well worth it.
Since then we have had lots of lovely cakes and bread from them.
The lardies were exceptional!
Happy days and happy retirement to Mark and all.
