IN response to the letter written by Richard Tambling this week I would like to point out that, as I understand it, the reason for the section of road widening at the railway bridge is to give vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians, etc, an area to wait while the traffic lights are against them, at present the road is too narrow to allow for this when there is traffic etc coming through on a green light from the A36 area.

This small narrow country road was never designed for the volume of traffic now using this as a rat run. This road has become over used since it was redesigned following the opening of the Petersfinger park and ride. Despite promises from the highways department to decrease the volume of traffic should there be a significant rise nothing has been done and talks and meetings get nowhere.

Milford Mill bridge over which these hundreds of vehicles drive over daily is an important Grade I listed building in the medieval city of Salisbury, one can Google this to read the history and its importance, yet despite Salisbury being promoted as a medieval city and its history, cathedral, and buildings it seems more important to highways department to utilise an unsuitable country lane as an escape from the A36 into the city centre than hold regard for a historical building. Traffic lights are being installed at this railway bridge in the hope of decreasing the road usage.

Until there is an agreement for a city bypass all of these rat runs in and around the city will continue to cause aggravation and misuse.
