Store would cause major traffic flow disasters

IAN Culverhouse has presented a very powerful argument for the Southampton Road supermarket site – from his company’s point of view (Journal, August 2).

However, he ignores what practically everyone else sees as the overriding disadvantage, that of going to or past it. Apart from the present twice daily and ever increasing blockage of the A36 there is certain to be a massive and immediate surge of traffic on Salisbury’s eastern bypass and chicken run, that of the minor road through Laverstock and its four schools and the bridge at Petersfinger At one stroke the “planners” and our elected representatives will achieve major traffic flow disasters on two roads.

I REGULARLY use the cycle lanes in Southampton Road. Before they were installed I didn’t like cycling there as one of my friends had been knocked over by a car.

Another major safety issue raised with this 'development' is the removal of the central reservation barrier. There are already far too many accidents on this stretch of road, some fatal. Some accidents are inevitable where a major trunk road through route encounters retail and commercial areas. Adding the probability of head-on collisions is supposed to alleviate the situation?
Money should not be a priority over safety.
