Pcc election not 'jobs for the boys'

I REALLY don’t follow Eric Hart’s argument in last week’s Postbag that the forthcoming election of Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) amounts to ‘jobs for the boys’. Surely barring current holders of public office from applying is quite the opposite.

Also, he is wrong in saying that retired public servants are barred - they are fully entitled to stand once that have resigned. If Mr Hart himself wishes to stand, nominations officially open on October 8 and close on October 19, 2012.

The election of PCCs is a national government initiative aimed at bringing more democratic control over the police service. Whatever else it is, it most certainly is not ‘jobs for the boys’.

I have to disagree with John about this election not being "jobs for the boys". I'm standing as a candidate but I can tell you that with a £5k deposit, 100 nominees needed Independent candidates are significantly disadvantaged.
