Chilmark Fonthill Bishop Primary visit Field to Food Learning day

The Field to Food learning day has become an integral part of the Society’s work in informing and educating young consumers about where their food comes from, and the hard work farmers do to make sure we eat the very best of British food.

Years two, three and four took part in the trip which took place on Wednesday, April 17, along with many other schools in the area. The Duchess of Edinburgh attended to see the “hard work and dedication” that goes into the event.

Sasha from Year 3 said: “The first thing we saw was a milk tanker which collects and delivers 18,000 litres of milk a day. We saw lots of animals, including different species of pigs, cows and sheep.

“We did lots of fun activities involving farming, food tasting, the water cycle and exploring vehicles and machinery. It was a really interesting day for us all and even the adults found out lots of new things."

This year’s event was the Society’s sixth Annual Field to Food Learning Day of interactive activities and demonstrations.

Royal Bath & West representative, Lilanie Self said: “It’s so lovely, it’s just heartwarming. It’s such an important message to get across and it’s one of our favourite days in the calendar for the whole team.

“Also alongside that, it does fit in with their curriculum which is really important to us. We make sure that it’s a valuable day out for them. They’re not missing out on classroom learning because what they’re doing here will link back to what they’re doing at school.”
