A new fish shop is coming to Salisbury - and a celebrity chef may be involved in the opening.

Downton Premier Fish, a traditional fishmongers, will open a shop in the premises of 9 Fish Row.

The shop will be called Premier Fish, opening around the beginning of March.

Andy Richards, Sales Director at the company, said the position on Fish Row is "quite fitting" for the business.

"We looked at a few places, and it is quite fitting it was Fish Row - we have a butchers a couple of doors down and a bakers across the row, and it just worked," he said.

The company has been looking for an opening since last January, but it has taken longer than anticipated due to Covid restrictions, and the fact that the site is a listed building.

He added: "We're going all out with it - and we're hoping this will be one of a few shops that we're looking at.

"We're looking at trying to use a celebrity chef that we have dealt with to come and open up for us, though we can't say anything else about this yet."

As well as delivering to homes in the area, Downton Premier Fish delivers to Salisbury businesses, who will be able to pop into the shop once it is open.

The business sells fresh fish sourced from ports and day boats in the UK, from reputable suppliers.

It started in 1995, and used to have a shop in Fordingbridge around 25 years ago.

The shop in Salisbury will offer its own smoked goods, as well as a range of fish, including lobster.

It will join Pritchetts, the traditional family butchers, on Fish Row, and will be opposite local business Reeve the Baker.

The site is a Grade II listed building, part of a group of medieval buildings extending from Butchers Row through to Queens Street, within Salisbury Conservation Area.

Wiltshire Council planning documents state that permission has been granted for external alterations to ground floor joinery, replacing existing modern shopfront mullions and transoms with sash windows, repainting the front of the shop and fascia signage, a non-illuminated hanging sign and internal removal of modern retail display fittings.
