NINE car businesses came together to "rectify" a customer's car for free after a botched job from a "cowboy detailer".

Josh Slark's Ford Focus ST was left in a "mess" after he got his car's paintwork valeted by another business.

The 26-year-old, from Durrington, realised the damage when he booked Reaper Details almost a year later and Iain noticed something wasn't right.

Josh was in total shock when he was shown extent of the poor work, he said: "It was a gut-wrenching feeling.

"I had put everything into this car and to know all that money I put in had made my car worse was just disappointing for me."

He was referred to Robin Bartlett, owner of Viking Detail at Unit 9 Glenmore Business Park, who was "horrified" when he saw what had happened to Josh's car.

Robin said: "I have never seen anything like it. It looked like it had been painted with boat varnish."

It took a team of nine detailing business owners from across the south 10 hours to fix the car's ceramic coating and paint job.

Robin priced labour costs up to around £2,800, which would have written off the car, but everyone opted to not charge Josh for the work.

"I have never had a company or friend treat me that well. The work they've done has made me fall back in love with my car," added Josh.

Atlas Detailing, Reaper Details, Premier Shine Detailing, LB Details, Valex Detail, Distinguished Detailing, Millie Details, Brite Wight Detailing, and Duel Auto Care all came together to help undo the damage.

Some businesses travelled from as far as the Isle of Wight and Brighton for the fix.

Robin decided to do the repairs free of charge to show not all detailers should be "tarred with the same brush".

Viking Detail is approved by the International Detailing Association, Robin said: "It was a feel-good moment and we felt it was our duty to fix it."

The work took the whole of December 20 to complete and Robin "vastly underestimated" how difficult it would be.

Following the act of generosity, the businesses have agreed to hold a charity raffle at the end of the year to win a whole day's worth of free detailing.

Robin is urging people who are thinking about getting their car detailed to check reviews and enquire with multiple businesses before making a final decision.
