A department store has confirmed it will be replacing Debenhams later this year.

The Journal first reported in November 2020 that Bradbeers could be taking over the site.

The prominent site on Blue Boar Row has been vacant since Debenhams pulled out of the city, after failing to reach “appropriate terms” with the landlord back in April 2020.

But Bradbeers boss Greg Davies has confirmed exclusively to the Journal that it will open in October and sell a large range of products, similar to the previous department store.

Workers have been seen going in and out of the building and Bradbeers vans have been spotted in public car parks in the city for some weeks.

While the opening date is almost one year later than first anticipated, director of Bradbeers Greg Davies is "really looking forward to opening".

Mr Davies said: "We feel the store will bring a boost to the local economy and will provide a range of employment opportunities.

"Bradbeers prides itself on excellent customer service and a great shopping experience."

The new store will offer cosmetics and fragrances, womenswear, menswear, accessories, shoes, homeware and a restaurant.

Bradbeers is a family-owned business which was established in 1837.

It has department stores in Romsey and New Milton as well as furniture stores in Hedge End, Southampton and New Milton.

The company also operates a removal and storage business with furniture rental.

An exact opening date for Bradbeers has not yet been revealed.
