A MOTOCROSS circuit which has been running for 22 years is set to close later this year.

Cusses Gorse MX, Winterbourne Gunner, announced it will be closing its gates for the last time on September 30.

Owners of the facility informed their social media followers that the landowner has requested the premises back for agricultural purposes.

Despite exhausting all attempts to change the landowner's mind, including asking to buy the land, the site will still be closing.

In its 22 years, the attraction has gained a large following and the shocking news has left fans feeling "gutted".

In a moving tribute, the team said they are "truly heartbroken" that they won't get to see what the next 20 years would have brought.

A spokesperson for Cusses Gorse thanked those who have supported the track throughout its time in Salisbury.

They said: "As a family and team we are truly gutted to be closing. We have put blood, sweat and tears into making the track something to be proud of."

Cusses Gorse has hosted all the major domestic championships, brought outdoor supercross to the UK and had the sidecar Grand Prix return to Britain at the venue.

"When we started out we never envisaged the track evolving into what it is today, one of the busiest tracks in the country," added the spokesperson.

All booked race meetings and events will still go ahead over the summer for the final season on the track

Upon hearing the news, followers and long-time fans of the track took to Facebook to express their feelings.

One commenter said: "Best track in the country, always maintained to the highest standard and always felt so welcomed at the track, this will be a huge loss to the sport.

"Hopefully reopen somewhere else, truly gutted to lose this track that I’ve ridden for the last 7 years."

Another rider added: "Endless memories at Gunner and by far my favourite track I’ve ever ridden. I'm so sad it’s come to an end."
