Two former Mayors of Salisbury are marking their 60th wedding anniversary later this month. 

Ken and Pam Edwards got married in St Michael's Church in Salisbury on March 28, 1964.

Mr Edwards was the city’s mayor in 1979/80, and his wife Pam served in the role in 1984/85, both while serving as Salisbury District Councillors. 

The couple were both born and educated in Salisbury.

Mr Edwards attended St Mark’s Junior school before going to St Thomas’s while his wife attended Bemerton St John and Westwood Schools.

They met when both worked at Wilton Sports and Toys in the Canal.

After they married in 1964, they moved to Kingston-upon-Thames where Ken worked for Moss Bros. After six years they returned to Salisbury.

In 1971 they returned to Salisbury and became involved in local politics and in 1973 Mr Edwards was elected to the Salisbury District Council followed by Pam in 1976.

During his mayoral year 1979/80 Mr Edwards raised £20,000 for the purchase of an Ambulance bus for the local MS Society, and became a volunteer driver for many years.

During his time on the District Council he was chairman of Salisbury City Committee for a number of years and the Amenities and Tourism Committee during which he oversaw a Sports and Recreation strategy which led to the opening of the Salisbury Leisure Centre and the Running track which he opened with Roger Black when Chairman of the District Council in 1994/95.

Sport centres in Tisbury and Durrington also opened during his tenure, and he also served on the County Council County in the 1980s.

Mrs Edwards raised more than £22,000 during her year in office 1984/85 for Hillcote Respite Centre for children, where she was working at the time, also the John McNeil Opportunity Group, and Exeter House School.

Mrs Edwards was involved with working with children all her working life, in the 70s starting her own playgroup with friends and is still to this day know to many as Auntie Pam.

The couple have been actively involved in the life of St Edmunds, St Michael's, and St Thomas’, churches Mr Edwards enjoyed singing in the 60s and having appeared on stage in local pantomimes.

During his 50 years in the clothing industry was well known for walking the catwalk in Fashion shows and Wedding fairs. He spent his last 30 working years with Chas Baker in Milford Street.

Mr Edwards is now Chairman of Wessex Stoma Support Group, and advisor to Mitrofanoff Support which he helped to set and was National Chairman for a number of years, he is also a volunteer for Colostomy UK. 

The couple have two sons: Antony who is married to Jane, and Justin, married to Debbie, and two grandchildren Samuel and Bethany. 

The couple are celebrating their anniversary with a dinner with family and friends.
