AMESBURY Tandoori combines one of the nation's favourite cuisines with a modern atmosphere.

The restaurant, which opens between 5.30pm and 10pm, had a quiet and discreet feel to it which was fitting for our evening meal on November 11.

Each table has plenty of space between them so that you can entirely focus on your company.

While there aren't many decorations, the restaurant's interior is clean and modern.

We were asked whether we'd like popadoms (95p each) and of course, the answer was yes - it's one of the best parts of any good Indian meal.

Then for our starters, we ordered onion bhajis (£4.75) and tandoori chicken (£5.25). The chicken came well-presented on the bone and packed with flavour.

The staff were not very talkative but friendly enough to provide a reasonable service. At times we felt their presence somewhat looming but this eased once the restaurant got busier into the evening.

Our main meals arrived around 25 minutes after our starters which was sufficient time to take in our surroundings and build an appetite.

Since the building is essentially one large house, sitting next to the front windows gave us an entertaining view of the cars speeding out of Amesbury Police Station.

I had the chef's special lamb bhunjon (£15.95) which was a signature dish of chunky, spiced and slow-cooked meat with pilau rice (£3.95) while my guest enjoyed her chicken tikka masala (£11.95) with steamed rice (£3.50).

Our garlic naan to share (£3.95) was alright, a little thin, but tasted good.

For the price, we were given plenty of food and neither of us could manage a dessert but the menu included staples such as sticky toffee pudding (£7.50), chocolate fudge cake (£7.50) and ice cream (£5.25).

Mango or pistachio kulfi, an authentic Indian ice cream, was also available for £4.75.

Amesbury Tandoori, which opened in 1988 when the tandoor cooking method became popular in the UK, has three parking spaces at the front of the building.

The restaurant offers a 10 per cent discount on certain dishes for collection takeaway orders over £15.
