A MAJOR collection of modern Christian art, regarded as the most prestigious outside the Vatican, is coming to Salisbury.

Faith in Focus, from the world famous Methodist Collection of Modern Art, consists of around 30 20th century art works and will be displayed in the Young Gallery at Salisbury Library and in Salisbury Cathedral.

The exhibition will run from September 26 to October 27 and a special evensong will be held at the cathedral to mark its opening.

Sarah Mullally, canon treasurer and chairman of the cathedral’s exhibitions committee, said: “I am delighted that this unique collection of art is being made available to us in Salisbury as a result of partnership working.

“It offers us the opportunity to see these wonderful pieces of Christian art in both the sacred space of the cathedral and the secular setting of the library”.

David Ensor, of Churches Together in Salisbury, said: “This is not an exhibition of religious art in the style of watercolour or landscape, impressionism or cubism. It is the expression of 20th century artists inspired by the Christian narrative.”
