ISIS, Jihadi brides and political correctness is the focus of comedian Shazia Mirza's new show which she says is her "funniest" yet.

The award-winning comedian brings her stand-up show, The Kardashians Made Me Do it, to the Salisbury Comedy Festival at Salisbury Arts Centre on Friday, December 2.

"The new show The Kardashians made me do it is about Isis, jihadi brides, political correctness and people being offended. It is hilarious — it is my funniest show.

"People have been really enjoying it and it has been sold out on the first leg - this bit now is the tour extension."

The comedian and columnist has appeared on various TV and radio shows including Have I Got News For You, NBC's Last Comic Standing, Beautiful People (BBC2), and she has a regular slot on Radio 2’s Vanessa Feltz Show and Radio 4’s The Now Show. She has also performed internationally from Texas to Kosovo.

Explaining the inspiration for the show, she said: "It is based on the three girls from Bethnal Green that went to go and join Isis last year. Their families were asked why they had gone to Syria and one of the sisters said 'I can't understand why she has gone, she used to watch the Kardashians'. That is what they told the government of our country and I saw that on TV, and just thought that is hilarious."

She says much of her inspiration comes from what is around her, adding: "No comedian is talking about anything else apart from Trump and Brexit. You have to, as a comedian, name the elephant in the room."

Describing her style of comedy she said: "I would say it is observational, about life, myself, my family. Most of it is true."

Comedy was a career change for Shazia, who used to be school science teacher. "It was just an accident really, it was nothing I ever planned.

"I used to be a teacher and taught at a really rough school and that is where I learnt my skills of trying to get people to listen to me, she said. "Kids used to escape my lessons through the window, no-one has ever tried to do that at one of my gigs."

Speaking about performing at the arts centre's comedy festival at the arts centre, she said: "I'm really excited. I've been there before and been to Salisbury before."

The festival also features performances from Tape Face, Zoe Lyons and Sean Walsh.
