NO matter where I turn I see it. Companies have lost their funding, business isn’t coming in, departments are closing and people are getting fired.

I am lucky that I haven’t been in this situation but I have had people write to me asking for jobs, looking for a break and wanting to get back into the job market.

I am not one for talking down the economy. I certainly believe that life doesn’t deal you a bad hand, it’s how you deal with each hand dealt that makes it a good or a bad hand.

I believe that everything in life certainly happens for a reason; if you are dealt lemons, make lemonade!

Often job security, pay and job satisfaction are spoken about as “bad hands”.

If you do lose your job, you can of course just do what everyone else does.

Complete a CV, look through the local newspaper and, if you are feeling really adventurous you could join a recruitment agency and ensure your CV is on LinkedIn.

While this is all very viable there is a new way to find that new job, to ensure you have satisfaction at work and to try to reach the remuneration you really want.

Social media presents a new opportunity and a new way to interact with potential employers.

Social media allows you to stop interrupting potential employers with your CV, but engage with companies online and build relationships.

To get social media job hunting to work for you, you need to ensure that you start thinking like a publisher of information.

Create an online presence that people are eager to consume. Share your knowledge and expertise with a world that is looking for what you have to offer.

Use a blog to show off your expertise. Whatever your line of work, if you are blogging regularly about your industry, giving latest insights, views and information, you are going to be highly regarded. Also use Twitter to look for jobs.

In the Twitter search bar, type the kind of job you are looking for, e.g. “social media jobs”, “marketing jobs”. Save these searches and check them on a daily basis. If something sounds like a good fit then join in the conversation. I use Twitter search regularly; Twitter search is a fantastic tool for connecting with the right people.
