A SERIES of events to mark national Purple Flag week are taking place in Salisbury this week.

The city will soon be celebrating a year since it achieved Purple Flag status, an award which recognises excellence in the management of night-time economy.

As part of the celebration, Wiltshire Council has worked with 30 shops and venues to create a treasure hunt around Salisbury, with prizes including tickets for the pantomime at Salisbury Playhouse, a £50 voucher for the Cathedral Hotel and a £30 voucher for Wagamama.

The winners will be drawn at 5pm on Friday during the vintage market being held in the Guildhall Square from noon until 8pm. There will be everything from antiques to bric-a-brac on sale and live music from Sandy Ince of Sticky Toffee Jazz throughout the day.

Among the activities are bedtime stories for children aged four and up at Salisbury Library tonight from 5.30pm to 6.30pm and a purple-themed weekend at The Chapel Nightclub on Friday and Saturday.

Maggie Rae, corporate director of Wiltshire Council and chairman of the Community Safety Partnership, said: “Gaining Purple Flag status last year was a tremendous achievement.

“We are committed to maintaining our partnership work on this issue to ensure that Salisbury continues to thrive and be a place where people want to visit and socialise. This is a great opportunity for us to celebrate Salisbury’s success so far.”
