TIDWORTH Town Council is basking in the glory of last week’s news that their town is in the top UK postcode.

The Journal reported that the SP9 postcode, which includes the town of Tidworth and its surrounding villages, has been named the most desirable in England according to a study carried out by Royal Mail.

The study calculated the most desirable postcodes based on a range of factors including employment opportunities, health, education, crime rates and housing affordability.

On their website the town council said: “This is fantastic news. Tidworth was always seen as a poor relation to the likes of Trowbridge and Devizes and almost looked over by Wiltshire Council; other neighbouring towns and villages may have sneered at us while others have only seen us as a garrison town.

“This news only goes to show that this is a great town, well run by the town council, a safe town with a low crime rate, which is working hard to attract new business into the area.”

The article also said that the town council is calling on all residents to help maintain and improve the area. “There are still areas of Tidworth that stakeholders shy away from, areas that need sorting out, grass cutting and tidied up, broken fences, with out-of-town-based owners turning a blind eye.”

It also said Wiltshire Council needs to “take note” that Tidworth is the only Wiltshire town in the top ten.
