VISITORS to Salisbury on weekends will be able to watch a live Guinness world record attempt – of a matchstick model of Salisbury Cathedral being built.

Matchstick man Barry King is at the Cross Keys Shopping Centre each weekend until Christmas.

Marking the model entirely out of matchsticks, he estimates it will take 13 years to complete.

He said: “I have used 374,000 matches so far. I’m hoping to complete the west front of the cathedral next year in time for the Magna Carta anniversary.”

Mr King, who is a maintenance man at the shopping centre, is building the model in his spare time, and has used the floor plan of the cathedral’s website for the model.

Visitors can help raise money for the Stars Appeal Breast Cancer Unit Campaign by entering a prize draw for a £1 and also guessing how many matches have been used for two previous matchstick projects of Mr King’s – a box and a picture.

He is working on the model at the shopping centre on the first floor on Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 6pm, and on Sundays from 10am to 4.30pm.
