DETECTIVES in Amesbury were left scratching their heads after a number of mysterious chalk markings appeared outside homes, garages and garden walls.
Police suspected the arrows in Larkhill and Amesbury were linked to potential criminal activity in the area, possibly marking targets for break-ins.
Yet it seems police were fooled by the innocent markings of a running club that was using the chalk to mark out a race route.
Police asked residents to report any suspicious incidents or any sightings of the markings.
PCSO Will Todd said: “Always ensure that your doors and windows are locked at all times and be aware of strangers paying attention to your neighbours' property. If you see someone acting suspiciously, report it immediately.”
Shortly after sending out the appeal, police retracted it, but reminded residents to think about their home security measures, remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour or activity.
