THE meeting held on Wednesday, February 11, began with president Val Reynolds welcoming three new members to the group.

Val also reminded members of the Wiltshire Federation Centenary Celebration to be held at Tidworth on April 2 when some members will be presenting their portrayal of ‘The WI Through The Years’. There will also be a special event at Redlynch Village Hall on June 4 when members plan to relay the Centenary AGM, which is being broadcast from The Royal Albert Hall. Lunch will be provided and we look forward to welcoming Redlynch members as well as any other WI members who may wish to join us – more details to follow.

The speaker for Wednesday was Jane White, who is a qualified milliner and who gave a fascinating demonstration on making hats. Jane displayed a range of hats which she had made and, using members as models, explained how best to wear them. She uses natural materials, such as straw, felt and sinamay, which comes from banana bark.

After showing the various tools and equipment she uses, Jane explained the various processes involved in shaping headwear to ensure a good fit. To embellish her hats she uses a wide variety of items including feathers, bows, buttons and buckles. Jane also gave advice on making a fascinator and provided instructions as well as “bits and pieces” in order to inspire us to create one of our own so that we can have a display later in the year. Everyone agreed it was a most enjoyable presentation.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday, March 11, at 2.15pm at Morgan’s Vale and Woodfalls’ Village Hall. The Speaker will be Demi Ladwa who will be talking about and demonstrating Indian Cookery.
