A VERWOOD mum took on a six day trek to the Himalayan mountains — braving storms and hiking through thick forest — to make a difference to people affected by cancer.

Pam Smith joined 27 others to trek in the Annapurnas to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support in Dorset and Hampshire last month.

It was her 10th trek with Macmillan but the 23rd trek she has undertaken to raise funds and awareness for the charity. She raised more than £3,500.

Pam, who is also volunteer for the charity, said: “Not only do I have unforgettable memories and a great bunch of new friends, but I know it will make a huge difference to the lives of people affected by cancer."

The group walked for six days , hiking through thick forest, and climbing above the tree line in storms and hail to camp among the great snow covered mountains of the Himalayas at 3000m.

Pam says she was also able to experience the landscapes of the Annapurna Massif, where wild monkeys and orchids could be seen in the the high forests, and crossed the Mardi Khola river where she met the local people there.

The trek took her eastwards through fields, across swaying bridges and through icy rivers. The team had to camp along the way.

Pam has raised nearly £40,000 in recent years by participating in trekking events and plans to trek with Macmillan Cancer Support next year.
