AVON Valley Scout Group will be taking part in the International Centenary of Scouting celebrations in Kanderstag, Switzerland this August.

A group of at least 20 young people aged between 14 and 18, representing the New Forest District Scouts and the Fordingbridge and district community will be attending.

This international event will involve the youngsters taking part in local cultural events and activities including walking the Eiger Trail, climbing, abseiling, caving, canoeing and tobogganing, as well as meeting Scouts from other countries.

The project has secured a Youth Opportunities Fund grant from Hampshire County Council and a contribution from the John Barron European Studies Trust.

And the proprietor and baker of Cottage Loaf, Michael Penton, will be donating five pence for every hot cross bun he sells from either of his shops in Downton or Fordingbridge to the Avon Valley Explorer Scout Group.

Mr Penton said he was delighted to be supporting the youngsters in their attempt to raise more funds.

Explorer Scout leader Andry Brooks said: "We are very fortunate where we live - scouting is an ideal way for young people to meet and get the most out of living in the New Forest."

He added: "This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for us to be part of such an international event."
