A CARETAKER and groundsman at Leaden Hall School in Salisbury has been recognised for his 30 years of service.

Barry White was appointed to the role on October 7, 1985, and says he still looks forward to each new day on his job.

A special celebration was held on Wednesday to mark the milestone and was attended by pupils and staff as well as former headmistress Miss Tyler, who described her first appointee as "my best appointment" and "able to work on his own initiative and enthusiastic about all aspects of his role".

When asked what attracted him to the school and the role, Barry said that he has horticulture in his blood, as well as a love of repairing.

Reflecting on his long service, he said: "All my bosses have treated me like family – family but professional."

Barry says he loves hearing the constant sound of music at the school and finds it satisfying working with children with whom he develops a great trust.

He said: "‘They’re not afraid to come to me when they need help."

Barry is a biker at heart and spends his spare time tinkering with his motorbikes – and exploring the UK in his camper van with his wife Beryl, who is part of the school catering team. He has also developed a passion for restoring dolls houses.
