DEVIZES MP Claire Perry shocked the House of Commons on Tuesday (February 08) when she accused pro-Brexit MPs of behaving like 'Jihadis'.

Ms Perry was among seven Tory MPs that defied the Chief Whip and voted in favour of Labour MP Chris Leslie's amendment, which argued that Parliament have a say on Theresa May's Brexit deal.

She claimed that the tone of the debate, "sometimes borders on the hysterical" before causing many members of her party to gasp in astonishment when she said: "I feel sometimes I am sitting along with colleagues who are like Jihadis in their support for a hard Brexit."

She then jokingly said to her fellow MPs: "No Brexit is hard enough, begone you evil Europeans, we never want you to darken our doors again."

John Glen MP refused to comment on his colleague's statement' but said Ms Perry expressed herself in her "own descriptive way" and was a very "valued colleague".

He defended the Government approach to Brexit and said it had accepted the need for a vote in Parliament.

"It is completely unrealistic to have a situation where the Government goes in block by block and deals with the 27 countries individually."

Mr Glen's Merchant Shipping (Homosexual Conduct) Bill passed the committee stage on Wednesday (February 8) and will now move onto the report stage, and third reading, before being transferred to the House of Lords.
