WILTSHIRE residents are being reminded that there will be no recycling collections on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day garden waste collections will be suspended from Christmas Day for two weeks.

Revised collection days are set out in the table below.

Salisbury Journal:

All collections, including garden waste, will return to normal from Monday January 15.

People who have paid for a garden waste collection service can leave their real Christmas tree alongside their garden waste bin on the first garden waste collection day in January and the council will ensure it is composted.

Wiltshire Council has issued the following advice:

• Please put your bins out at 7am on your collection days

• If you receive new electrical items for Christmas, please recycle your old ones at your local Household Recycling Centre

• You will no doubt need batteries this Christmas, please don’t put old batteries in the bin as they can cause fires in the collection vehicles and at the waste treatment plant. These can be recycled at most shops that sell them and your local household recycling centre

• If you have too many glass bottles for your black box, simply leave the extras ones in a carrier bag next to it the box on your next collection day

• Want to recycling your Christmas jumper? Don’t forget you can put that, and other textiles, in a carrier bag in your black box

• When it’s time to take the Christmas cards down, these can be recycled in your blue lidded bin providing they are not shiny or glittery.

• Don’t want to waste any food this Christmas? We subsidise food waste composters that can take all food waste. Visit www.wiltshire.gov.uk/reducing-your-waste-and-composting

• If you can scrunch your used wrapping paper up and it doesn’t bounce back then this can be recycled in your blue lidded bin. Foil wrapping paper cannot be recycled

• Opening hours and days at our Household Recycling Centres will be changing over the Christmas period – please visit www.wiltshire.gov.uk/household-recycling-centres to check when your local centre is open.

Bridget Wayman, Wiltshire Council cabinet member for waste, said: “It’s a very busy time of year for our waste collection service with lots more extra waste generated. We’d ask people to bear with us during this time as collections may be at a different time during the day than normal due to the sheer amount needing collecting.

“We’d encourage everyone to recycle as much as they can over the Christmas and New Year period and our dedicated team will be on hand to collect it.”
