ALL week The Argus has been following the beekeeping antics of Wish ward councillor Robert Nemeth who has been called out to rescue several swarms.

Beewatch has been a real hive of activity and the drama continues.

So far swarms have been collected from a car bonnet in Grange Road, a watermelon on Church Road and a gate post in Langdale Road, all in Hove.

Cllr Nemeth, who is being dubbed by some on Facebook as The Beeman, was also called to Vale Road in Portslade yesterday where yet another swarm had collected in a garden bush.

Karin Rivas, the owner of the garden, said: “I was amazed how many bees and how calm they were.

“Robert and his helper were great and got them in the box, although there were some naughty ones who didn’t want to go to bed.”

Cllr Nemeth said: “It’s been a busy week for bees, there certainly seems to be an influx of swarms right now, I collected another one from a compost bin in Dyke Road Avenue yesterday.

“It was a tricky winter for beekeepers, I lost five hives worth during the cold snap as we weren’t expecting temperatures to dip so low for a second time."

At the time of writing, a further swarm had been spotted at the top of Southwick Green, although this time it was another beekeeper’s turn to take them to their new home.
