BASINGSTOKE Town moved up to fourth in the Southern League Premier South after chalking up their second victory of the Bank Holiday weekend.

This was after they beat visiting Gosport Borough 2-1 on Monday, which followed on from their 4-1 success at Frome.

Town boss Jason Bristow picked an unchanged side for the visit of Gosport and they took the lead after just five minutes.

Zidane Akers played the ball onto George Bennett and his great cross was met by Sam Argent's glancing header.

Gosport went looking for an equaliser and Ryan Pennery had two good chances, the first flashed across the goal and the second was saved by Colm McAdden.

The visitors looked the more likely to score, but against the run of play, Town made it 2-0 on 25 minutes.

Sam Deadfield with a lovely ball from one side of the pitch to the other found Sam Smart out on the right wing.

He left Harry Medway in his tracks and from the byline sent in a cross, which Deadfield converted from close range.

On the 42 minute mark, Pennery got his deserved goal, as once more he found space on the left and slotted the ball over McAdden.

Town nearly grabbed a third right at the end of the half, as a Shane Hollamby header to back post saw Dan Bayliss denied.

For the start of the second half, Town brought on midfielder Dan Collier to stop them being over run in the middle of the park.

This worked, but it was also helped by the fact that outfield player Tony Lee took over in goal for the injured Mark Childs and sub Samuel Lanahan became the lone striker.

He so nearly grabbed them a equaliser just after the interval, but a superb block by Hollamby denied him.

After this Town went looking for a third goal and three very useful attacks were crudely ended by Gosport player earning each of them yellow cards.

After this there was not a lot to talk about, as the home side looked in control, but with only a one goal lead, Gosport always had a chance.

The closest they came to an equaliser was from Medway late on, as he flashed the ball across the face of goal.

Town are next in action at second placed Taunton on Saturday.
