JUNO Theatre has been awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £4,700 to support a new year-long project, The Salisbury Tales: Ancient and Modern.

The grant is for the two elements of the project, the first is a performance on Sunday September 23 at 2.30pm of seven new plays commissioned by Juno Theatre.

The plays were generated during a workshop in St Thomas’s Church and will be performed there.

The funding will also be used to support outreach events collecting the stories of those residents whose voices are often unheard - carers, the elderly and homeless, young people and vulnerable adults.

Supported through the Heritage Lottery Fund there will be further performances and displays during the year.

As Juno gathers stories from local people the emphasis will be on celebrating people from all walks of life living in a community that has gone through a difficult time recently. Also core to this project is St Thomas’s Church, constructed for the workers building Salisbury Cathedral and seen as the church of the city. Its heritage will be celebrated by this project as it nears its 800th anniversary.

Sue Ashby, Juno Theatre chair said: “Juno is thrilled to be funded by Heritage Lottery Fund for this exciting project and making it possible for us to bring the healing power of the arts to Salisbury.”
