CYBER crime is on the increase, as police find themselves having to deal with these types of crime more than ever.

Alongside traditional crimes including burglary and assault, police are now having to tackle the aftermath of cyber crime with victims regularly being online shoppers.

Since becoming head of Wiltshire Police Fraud department in 2013, Det Sgt Lee has noted a rise in cyber crime, adding: "My job means I see a whole host of different types of frauds - including the high-tech ones.

"There are some very unscrupulous people out there wanting to rip people off and often that happens when people are online.

"I've seen many changes in the force over the thirty years I've worked here but I would say one of the biggest shifts is how criminals act and the type of crimes we as officers have to deal with."

According to Wiltshire Police it is estimated 80 per cent of cyber crime is preventable, but the public must consider the legitimacy of businesses, websites and phone calls they confide personal details in.

Det Sgt Lee added: "Remember - in order to avoid becoming a victim of online crime you don't need to be a computer expert.

"Using good online habits drastically reduces the chances of becoming a victim of cybercrime and will allow you to reduce your vulnerability and surf the web safely."

If you have been a victim of cyber crime report it to Action Fraud or ring 0300 123 2040.
