A CHARITY which started in Salisbury has doubled its volunteer numbers in the city in the past few months.

Care Home Volunteers, now based in Chippenham recruits, trains and supports volunteers to offer companionship to elderly people living in care homes, particularly those who don't have visits from friends or family.

Kate Brooks, Volunteer Coordinator, said, "We are lucky to have such a wonderful team of volunteer befrienders in Salisbury, making over 70 visits to residents in local care homes each month.

"Our volunteers often say how rewarding it is to bring such joy and happiness to people's lives."

Jane Wheeler, who joined the team earlier this year, said: "I heard about Care Home Volunteers and knew this is just what I wanted to do.

"A couple of hours a week chatting to residents feels so rewarding, to see the smiles and for me to leave with a smile too.

"I thoroughly recommend volunteering to anyone who wishes to make a difference to those in need of companionship."

Recent studies have shown that spending as little as one hour a week with individual residents getting to know them, their lives, hobbies and interests can make a huge difference to their wellbeing, and the charity is looking for more people to join the team in Salisbury.

Kate says, "We know there are more residents who would really benefit from visits and I'd welcome anyone who's interested in finding out more to get in touch with me.

"For example, we are currently looking for a volunteer to visit Arthur on a regular basis.

"Arthur has a keen interest in history, particularly military history, having spent many years in the Royal Navy.

"He has travelled widely and loves chatting about other countries and cultures.

Arthur's wife used to visit him every day but has been poorly and can no longer visit as often, and he would love some companionship."
