THE Basingstoke Bison suffered the heartache of losing 5-4 in overtime at the Sheffield Steeldogs on Sunday night, in the Autumn Cup.
This was after the Herd got off to great start, as Michal Klejna converted a pass from Adam Jones after 77 seconds.
The home side hit back with Nathan Salem scoring shorthanded at 9:03 and it remained 1-1 at the first buzzer.
Ashley Calvert then gave Sheffield the lead, but within a minute the Bison were level on the powerplay, as Richard Bordowski scored from Alex Sampford and Russ Cowley.
The home side then took the lead at 37:43 on the powerplay, as Salem scored his second of the net.
Within the first two minutes of the third period, Calvert extended the Steeldogs lead to 4-2.
However, the Herd hit back as Bordowski grabbed his second of the game, assisted by Sampford and Tom Ralph.
The home side were then given a great chance to restore their two goal lead, when Ashley Tait tripped Sheffield import Adrian Palak and they were awarded a penalty shot.
However, Palak was unable to beat Alex Mettam at 47:42.
The Bison then tied the game up six minutes later, as George Norcliffe netted from Cowley to make it 4-4.
With no further scoring the game went into overtime and Salem scored the winner 36 seconds into the extra period to complete his hat-trick.
The result leaves the Bison second in the South group one point ahead of Swindon and one behind Peterborough.
This weekend, the Herd are in Autumn Cup action again with a double header against the Hull Pirates. The home game is on Saturday.
