SALISBURY shoppers are being given the chance to come to the aid of disaster response charity Serve On.

The city’s Waitrose store has included the charity in its three good causes who will share funding from the store this month.

Serve On is fundraising after its kit van was destroyed at its Chilmark training centre.

Volunteers from the charity support the emergency services during severe weather events like flooding, as well as providing help for local events, have to raise funds for the equipment they use to help the community and a new van is now high on their list.

Serve On’s operations manager Craig Elsdon said the recent wanton damage to their vehicle at Chilmark had made the charity all the more determined to make sure they are ready to help their local community, and other communities, in times of crisis.

He said: “We have been overwhelmed by the support we have received from the public following the vandalism and Waitrose’s kind gesture is further evidence of the tremendous goodwill out there.

“Any donations help us to do what we do, and a new kit van would not only help us to respond to future severe weather events but would help us to move equipment, and volunteers, to some of the local charity events we support, in this community and elsewhere.”

Customers shopping at the Churchill Way West store will be able to support Serve On using a green token as part of the Community Matters scheme.

Any money the charity receives will help them to continue supporting the public in times of emergency and at community events.

Last year, Serve On volunteers helped communities hit by Hurricane Irma in the Caribbean. They have also deployed to areas in the UK affected by flooding.
