THE Regal Cinema in Fordingbridge celebrated the best of British cinema.

It held a 10-day film festival, which ran from September 21 to Sunday 30.

It featured British movies from the last 70 years including the original 1967 adaption of Hardy’s Far From The Madding Crowd, Brief Encounter and the 1955 Ealing comedy The Lady Killers.

A cinema spokesman said: “We’ve had great fun celebrating the best of British films with many of our shows selling out. Our themed events were particularly popular – we had guests dressing up for the Beatles film A Hard day’s Night and a standing ovation for Andrew Harrison-King who played his piano score live to Hitchcock’s silent movie The Lodger. We dedicated our screening of ‘Withnail and I’ to the late film production designer Michael Pickwoad. We had various props on display and a special short film of his career highlights compiled by one of The Fordingbridge Regal Cinema Club members.

“It was wonderful to see so many members but also to welcome new day members to The Regal.”

New initiatives starting include Musical Mondays, which take place on the second Monday of the month at 7pm, and Silver Screen events for older film fans every third Tuesday of the month, 3pm.
